Alex Gluchowski on trusting AI agents with money

Alex Gluchowski, CEO and co-founder of Matter Labs, tells Yahoo Finance at Money20/20 USA what it would take for him to let an AI agent spend his money. He points to control, to someone who underwrites the outcome if something goes wrong, and to security for both the infrastructure and the agent, because a final payment sent to the wrong place is gone.

For me to let an AI agent spend my money, I would need to have much greater trust in my ability to control what really happens. And that probably means that someone has to be responsible and someone has to underwrite the, the guarantees that if something goes wrong, they will be, uh, interfering and making things good again.

If a payment is final in a second and an agent sends it to a wrong place, the money is gone. So you really have to put effort into securing the both infrastructure and securing the agent’s ability to send this money, as well as the way you control and guarantee the correctness of the agent behavior.

What makes people trust money that are on the blockchain is a two-sided answer. It’s the security of the systems that the blockchain provides as inherent guarantees, and the integrity of people and institutions who are building those systems and making sure that they are working as intended.
